Quo drop concert plans

PLANS for three massive outdoor concerts by Status Quo early this summer have been dropped after local government pressure, but the band are still touring with shows at some of the largest venues they can find, with two nights at Wembley Arena and a show at the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre on the tour list.

The band were planning to bring in a massive tent with a 6,000 fan capacity for outdoor concerts at Cardiff, Exeter and Ipswich, but after agreement had been reached with authorities at Cardiff's Sophia Park and the football clubs at Exeter and Ipswich, local fire officers objected on safety grounds.

Their safety proposals would have limited the tent capacity to 2,000, which would have been totally uneconomic for the band, so the tent plan has now been shelved.

Quo management also failed to set up shows at the Liverpool Empire on May 31 and June 1 after Moss Empires, who manage the theatre, reportedly withdrew the bookings for fear of upsetting the licensing authority if the fans flouted the "no standing" rule and the venue or caused any damage. The band now play at Blackpool on the two nights planned for Liverpool.

Quo start their tour at Wembley Arena on May 10 and Il, and follow on: Birmingham National Exhibition Centre (12), Newcastle City Hall (15, 16, 17 and 18), Bridlington Spa Hall (19), Carlisle Market Hall (21), Edinburgh Odeon (23, 24, 25 and 26), Glasgow Apollo (27, 28), Blackpool Opera House (May 31, June 1), Sheffield City Hall (5, 6), Manchester Apollo (9, 10, 11, 12), Cardiff Sophia Park (13, 14) and Southampton Gaumont (20, 21).

Tickets for Wembley (£5, £4 and £3), and Birmingham (£5 only), are now on sale by post. Further tour dates are liktly (sic) to be added.
