QUO TOUR

27 big concerts, two at Wembley

STATUS QUO undertake a major British tour in the late spring, comprising 27 concerts over a five week period. Besides taking in some of the country's largest halls, like Wembley Arena and Birmingham Exhibition Centre, they'll also be visiting some towns not usually covered by big-name acts - such as Bridlington and Carlisle.

Their schedule comprises London Wembley Arena (May 10 and 11), Birmingham National Exhibition Centre (12), Newcastle City Hall (15, 16, 17 and 18), Bridlington Spa Hall (19), Carlisle Market Hall (21), Edinburgh Odeon (23, 24, 25 and 26), Glasgow Apollo (27 and 28), Blackpool Opera House (31 and June 1), Sheffield City Hall (5 and 6), Manchester Apollo (9, 10, 11 and 12), Cardiff Sophia Gardens (13 and 14) and Southampton Gaumont (20 and 21).

Quo, just back from a 30-date European tour and currently in the studio mixing new material, may be adding further dates to this list. Tickets for Wembley (£5, £4 and £3) and Birmingham (£5 only) are already on sale by postal application only, and readers should contact individual box-offices for booking arrangements at other venues.

In an attempt to accommodate as many people as possible, Quo had planned special outdoor concerts in Exeter, Ipswich and Cardiff, employing the 6,000-capacity tent they had used to good effect for their French gigs. Exeter and Ipswich football clubs and the management of Cardiff's Sophia Park had already agreed to the project, but local fire officers put a stop tp (sic) the plan.

Also missing from the agenda is Liverpool Empire, where the band had hoped to play on May 31 and June 1, but it seems the venue's management (Moss Empires) have withdrawn the booking for fear of upsetting the local authorities. So Quo have switched these gigs to the nearest available venue, Blackpool Opera House.
