STATUS QUO have come under heavy fire from the Anti Apartheid lobby after revelations that they played South Africa's notorious Sun City. Artists Against Apartheid said this week: "We are very disappointed that at this point in history there are still musicians willing to blind themselves to the painful realities of apartheid." Several celebrities have condemned Quo's decision to play in South Africa, among them Paul Heaton of the Housemartins who commented: "In playing Sun City, an artist is fully embracing the South African apartheid system. Status Quo fans should realise that the band's decision to play is based purely on a mixture of greed and ignorance - a mixture so popular with Botha himself." For their part, through a spokesman, Quo replied to the criticisms. "The group were satisfied that progress has been made towards equality for blacks in Sun City before they decided to appear, and they don't believe in sanctions." There could now be trouble ahead for Quo concerning future gigs in Europe.
