And on came Status Quo, four blokes who make a very good living considering they were once referred to as lame brains.
The sound in the vast auditorium was dire, but none of the audience appeared to notice. Those who previously had been sitting at the back, jealously guarding their cans of lager, rose for the occasion and despite the vast seating arrangement preferred to crush themselves standing near the front.
Quo were incredible - just the kind of band you need to keep your spirits up when it's pouring with rain outside. And despite the fact many of the audience had been there for nearly eight hours Quo managed to generate a whole lotta excitement for everyone.
"Backwater/Just Take Me", was announced to lots of applause, they could have played "Happy Birthday" and would have got the same reaction. And always you were aware of a foot tapping and a head nodding - then you'd look down and see it was your own.
At the midnight hour we got the obligatory 'Auld Lang Syne' immediately followed by "Caroline" (their best stage number) and "Bye Bye Johnnie".
