QUO IN SA ROW

STATUS QUO have sparked off storms of protest from anti-apartheid campaigners following their decision last week to perform at the Sun City complex in South Africa.

The Housemartins' Paul Heaton said this week: "Status Quo fans should realise that the band's decision to play is based purely on a mixture of greed and ignorance - a mixture so popular with Botha himself. The Housemartins will never play to those murdering-white-South African-bastards."

Mark Shaw, singer with Then Jerico, added: "When I was 13, Status Quo were one of my favourite rock bands and probably one of the reasons I got into rock music. I cannot believe that people can fall so low and so far down in my estimation. 'In The Army Now'? They should join the bloody Gestapo."

Finally, Jerry Dammers, the driving force behind the UK branch of AAA, said: "I think it is pathetic that anyone should want to do business in South Africa at a time when more and more horrific evidence is coming to light of the torture of children by electric shocks and other methods. I hope that every deejay who plays a Status Quo record will remember how they have stupidly allowed themselves to be conned and used by the Apartheid propaganda machine.
