Quo: singing in the Rain
STATUS QUO burn ahead this week with a Rick Parfitt hit composition called "Rain" (Vertigo). The Quo riff is ground pungently into thick air like a cigarette stubbed out on the back of your hand. Painful.
It's a metal galvanism of electric sound which rips stomachs apart and will have slightly inebriated fans running to the sink to "shoot a cat." But as usual. twisting in the opposing direction to the pounding, relentless layers of basic drive, is a lighter lyrical streak - an oil slick of vocal harmonies poured into the mix like an elixir from hell.
The band, although they spent longer than ever before making their forthcoming album "Blue For You," are closer knit than they've been for a while and the friendly drollery of their present mood has this sound cooking.
Rumour has it that the band are refusing to do certain TV promotion spots because of past hassles. Come on lads, show a leg!
It may be a drag for you, but some of us live for a celluloid frame or two of blue denim madness.
This track is Quo Mk. 1, but it may need heavy promotion to get to the top of the chart. Not that there's any rock 'n' roll competition on the horizon this week!
