A storm of protest erupted in Britain last week after Status Quo announced their intention to play Sun City in South Africa. Anti-apartheid campaigners spoke out bitterly against the veteran band's decision. Said the Housemartins' Paul Heaton: "Status Quo fans should realise that the band's decision to play Sun City is based purely on a mixture of greed and ignorance - a mixture so popular with Botha himself." Added Jerry
Dammers, driving force behind the AAA's UK movement: "I think it's pathetic that anyone should want to do business in South Africa at a time when more and more horrific evidence is coming to light of the torture of children by electric shocks and other methods. I hope every DJ who plays a Status Quo record will remember how they have stupidly allowed themselves to be conned and used by the Apartheid propaganda machine."
