'Status Quo: The Authorised Biography' by John Shearlaw (Sidgwick And Jackson, hardback £8.95; paperback £5.50). The trouble with authorised biographies is that you can't reveal the real scam on some of the controversial points of a band's career. But Status Quo appear to have few such skeletons in their cupboard and the history of their persevering slog over a decade and a half is a good enough story in
itself although I was curious to know more about their transition from silk shirts to denims. There's some good quotes dotted around, notably Alan Lancaster saying "We used to write songs from the riffs the audience would pick on - at the time most of our songs would come from them."
