Status Quo at Butlin's Minehead
IN its own way, Butlins in Minehead helped create history 25 years ago.
Two South London lads, Rick Parfitt and Francis Rossi, teamed up there - later becoming Status Quo.
It's the perfect setting for the group's 'hello campers' rock style. For hi-de-hi, they have wo-oh-oh or oh-wo-wo.
Last night, they were back the Somerset camp, now called Somerwest World, to launch their silver jubilee celebrations.
Stomped
They opened with Caroline and stomped through a selection of 39 hits which have clocked up 100million record sales - delighting 2,000 fans.
Parfitt and Rossi move in synchronisation, then scatter around the stage, chat, gee up the audience and carry on playing.
Quo have always managed to hang on to that ever-present riff. Likewise their fans.
In front of me was someone wearing a T-shirt, circa 1984, proclaiming The Final Tour. They could not give up - and when they go on the road in December, they'll play to sell-out crowds.
Quo have become a venerable institution. We mock them, but an awful lot of people feel very affectionate towards them.
