RORY GALLAGHER, FACES AND OTHERS: "READING FESTIVAL" (GM RECORDS GML 1008).
"SELECTED HIGHLIGHTS from the 1973 Marquee Reading Festival" is the full sub-title of this album, so what else is there to say? The sound quality is pretty good for a live album, and the various artists do their stuff with commendable vigour to an enthusiastic crowd. Whether you want the album probably depends on whether you want competent live version of the tracks performed: I'd say it was the pertect heads - down - and - everybody - shake album - re-create the spirit of Berkshire in the comfort of your own front room. It's an admirable souvenir, no doubt, crossed with a fair sampler album, but it's not one I'll be playing very often. Personal favourites are Tim Hardin's "Hang On To A Dream" and "Person To Person", complete with orchestra, and Rory Gallagher's "Hands Off'. The rest of the tracks are Strider's "Road Runner", with a guitar sound remarkably close to early Free, Greenslade's "Feathered Friends", Status Quo's "Don't Waste My Time", The Faces' "Losing You" which features a long drum solo, Andy Bown's "Long Legged Lisa", and Lesley Duncan's "Earth Mother". - SP.
